Windows Desktop Search
A very useful feature of Vista found in all editions is Windows Desktop Search. Desktop Search engines have been around for a couple of years now, probably the best known being Google Desktop Search. Now, similarly powerful desktop search capabilities are built into Windows Vista as standard. The two things that make Windows Desktop Search powerful are first that your system indexes the files on your system in the background so search results are virtually instantaneous.

Secondly, Windows Desktop Search provides search results based on the contents of files (words within files) as well as file names and metadata (properties). In order to look inside files and index their contents, Windows Desktop Search uses a technology called i-Filters which open up the contents of otherwise proprietary file formats to indexing. Unfortunately Autodesk have not provided a DWG i-Filter but there are commercially available i-Filters on the market. We tested a beta of CAD & Company’s DWG i-Filter which worked very well with Vista and AutoCAD 2008 DWG files.

Looks like they have finally released the Autocad iFilter (dwg file extension) for trail download.  Now you will have the aiblity to add AutoCAD ... files to your desktop search results (i.e. Microsoft Windows Desktop Search).  Within SharePoint sites, you can now add DWG and DXF content search.
